Not all calcium consumed is actually absorbed in the gut. Humans absorb about 30% of the calcium in foods, but this varies depending upon the type of food consumed [1]. Other factors also affect calcium absorption including the following:

> Amount consumed: the efficiency of absorption decreases as calcium intake increases [1].

> Age and life stage: net calcium absorption is as high as 60% in infants and young children, who need substantial amounts of the mineral to build bone [1,8]. Absorption decreases to 15%–20% in adulthood (though it is increased during pregnancy) and continues to decrease as people age; compared with younger adults, recommended calcium intakes are higher for females older than 50 years and for both males and females older than 70 years [1,8,9].

> Vitamin D intake: this nutrient, obtained from food and produced by skin when exposed to sunlight of sufficient intensity, improves calcium absorption [1].

> Other components in food: phytic acid and oxalic acid, found naturally in some plants, bind to calcium and can inhibit its absorption. Foods with high levels of oxalic acid include spinach, collard greens, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, and beans. Among the foods high in phytic acid are fiber-containing whole-grain products and wheat bran, beans, seeds, nuts, and soy isolates [1]. The extent to which these compounds affect calcium absorption varies. Research shows, for example, that eating spinach and milk at the same time reduces absorption of the calcium in milk [10]. In contrast, wheat products (with the exception of wheat bran) do not appear to lower calcium absorption [11]. For people who eat a variety of foods, these interactions probably have little or no nutritional consequence and, furthermore, are accounted for in the overall calcium DRIs, which factor in differences in absorption of calcium in mixed diets.

Some absorbed calcium is eliminated from the body in urine, feces, and sweat. This amount is affected by such factors as the following:

> Sodium and protein intakes: high sodium intake increases urinary calcium excretion [12,13]. High protein intake also increases calcium excretion and was therefore thought to negatively affect calcium status [12,13]. However, more recent research suggests that high protein intake also increases intestinal calcium absorption, effectively offsetting its effect on calcium excretion, so whole body calcium retention remains unchanged [14].

> Caffeine intake: this stimulant in coffee and tea can modestly increase calcium excretion and reduce absorption [15]. One cup of regular brewed coffee, for example, causes a loss of only 2–3 mg of calcium [13]. Moderate caffeine consumption (1 cup of coffee or 2 cups of tea per day) in young women has no negative effects on bone [16].

> Alcohol intake: alcohol intake can affect calcium status by reducing its absorption [17] and by inhibiting enzymes in the liver that help convert vitamin D to its active form [18]. However, the amount of alcohol required to affect calcium status and whether moderate alcohol consumption is helpful or harmful to bone is unknown.

> Phosphorus intake: the effect of this mineral on calcium excretion is minimal. Several observational studies suggest that consumption of carbonated soft drinks with high levels of phosphate is associated with reduced bone mass and increased fracture risk. However, the effect is probably due to replacing milk with soda rather than the phosphorus itself [19,20].

> Fruit and vegetable intakes: metabolic acids produced by diets high in protein and cereal grains increase calcium excretion [21]. Fruits and vegetables, when metabolized, shift the acid/base balance of the body towards the alkaline by producing bicarbonate, which reduces calcium excretion. However, it is unclear if consuming more fruits and vegetables affects bone mineral density. These foods, in addition to reducing calcium excretion, could possibly reduce calcium absorption from the gut and therefore have no net effect on calcium balance.

Kriteria pemilihan protein soya

  • Kacang soya itu sendiri mesti tumbuh membesar secara organic~ Kenapa soybeans mesti ditanam secara organic….sebab kajian penananam secara kimia (bukan organic) akan menyebabkan nutrisi makanan berkurangan.. Dan dari segi kajian..sudah terbukti ada hubungkait antara cancer dan nitrates.. Jadi amatla penting pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides tidak digunakan disepanjang proses pembesaran soybeans ni.

So You've Given Up Breastfeeding

I often have to sit and listen to assorted tales of woe from women who gave up breastfeeding because they had mastitis, cracked nipples, a c-section, the runs.

It seems that a large proportion of formula feeders are not happy with their choice. Statistics back this up: “Every year more than 200,000 mothers stop breastfeeding in the first few days and weeks – 90% of these mothers would have liked to continue” (The Guardian 2011).

Now of course, these women will swear blind that they did not give up breastfeeding due to lack of effort. Great! Because what I am about to suggest will require effort in spades

-          Relactation!

It’s never too late to breastfeed. Breast milk is a flexible resource. Amazingly, it’s also possible to induce lactation when you’ve never given birth or ever been pregnant. So there really is no excuse ladies! Here’s how it’s done:

You’ll need to pump every two to four hours, day and night. Some women start to produce milk within  three weeks, while others may need six weeks or more. If you’re relactating, the rule of thumb states that it will take at least the same amount of time to begin lactating as has passed since you weaned, so if it’s been six weeks since you breastfed, it will probably take six weeks to fully lactate.

Try not to become discouraged if you have little or no visible milk production while pumping. There's something about a real baby, her smell or the feel of her in your arms, that jump-starts lactation like nothing else. Close your eyes while pumping and think about your little one. Creative visualization can affect your whole body.

Here’s my four-step feeding process for relactating:

1.       If possible, breastfeed for a few minutes to encourage the baby to associate the breast with feeding. Provide skin-to-skin contact.
2.       Supplement the feeding with a supplemental feeding device (such as THIS one) that can be used while baby nurses.
3.       Cut out any other source of sucking; This includes a pacifier.
4.       Pump using a high quality breast-pump (Look for one that provides an automatic suction-release cycle that mimics your baby's suck; THIS is the best one - these hospital-grade pumps offer double pumping, are great for establishing a strong milk supply, and are perfect for the working mother).

Regarding step 2: initially you will need to carry on feeding your baby with formula until your milk supply has got going again. This is where the supplemental feeding device (SFD) comes in. A SFD is a device whereby your baby sucks formula from a small tube taped to your nipple, thus stimulating your milk production as he sucks.

When the time comes to put your baby to the breast, you have to be patient. Many older babies are often a little reluctant to nurse from a breast at first, as they’ve been bottle fed and may need time to become accustomed to the breast.

Think positive: you can build up a milk supply once more. If adoptive mothers can do it, so can you! This article taken from...

Ada jgk yg ckp muka kl nk cantik dalaman mesti cantik jgk...maksudnye hati pn mesti mau bersih n cantik dl kan..back to realiti, kl nk kulit yg cantik n sihat mesti la bermula dr dalam..iaitu pemakanan yg sihat n seimbang. Kulit sy jenis yg sgt senang naik jerawat..nk2 time period n stress..mmg xleh nk elak la hormon wanita gitu..tp xleh la nk jdikan alasan xnk jaga kulit kan. Betapa hebatnye penangan shaklee ni,trus sign up jd distributor

Salam semua...Pg2 bukak fb kuar post dr wife kpda seorg member sy ms kt u dl..jom baca post kwn ni...

"Today is the day where i decided to join the Shaklee group, as an Independent Distributor.

Why?
Because i tried their products (its been almost 3 weeks now) n i can see good results. I only bought the trial pack (my budget is quite limited n also i am very sceptical towards "beauty products" especially supplements, because i always tell myself, i dont have any health problems, so i dont need them)

What made me changed my mind n decided to try them out?
While i was pregnant with Sofia, i took lots of vitamins in a day. Vitamin B, vitamin C, fish oil, folic acid, calcium, u name it. I was thinking, the baby is "stealing" all the vitamins n minerals from my body, so i need all these extra vitamins to replace whats lost n "stolen" by her. I completely stopped everything after the delivery. Somehow, only now i realized, why did i stop?? My baby is still breastfeeding, so technically, she is still "stealing" all those nutrients from me! (I have no idea why it took me 10 months to realize that). So yeah, that was when i decided to try Shaklee

Here are my observations :
1. Skin feels softer n smoother (ask my husband! Hihi)
2. Less hair fall (new mothers will know this, especially those yg baby tgh start menyembur2)
3. Stretch mark, cellulite, old scars (from previous cuts) are slowly becoming less obvious
4. Feels a lil bit lighter n energetic (psychologically kut)
5. The best part is, i noticed that when a mosquito bit my baby yesterday, the mosquito bite was gone in less than half an hour! All this while, it took MONTHS for a single mosquito bite to become completely gone. (U can look up her previous photos from my album). I have tried a lot of cream, serum, petua, but nothing works. Tapi this one is too early to tell, need more observation. (Was hoping for a mosquito to bite her again to confirm the result, boleh gitu?)
There are few more results but i cant put it here. No, not in public (u can send me a msg to find out though hehe)
